WATCH: Trump’s CIA Pick Calls Out Adam Schiff Mid-Hearing

PoliticsWATCH: Trump’s CIA Nominee Confronts Adam Schiff During Senate Hearing Published 1 day ago on January 16, 2025 By Mark Steffen

A typically routine U.S. Senate hearing took a tense turn when President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for CIA director directly accused Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) of attempting to undermine the initial Trump administration through a campaign of misinformation.

John Ratcliffe, a straightforward intelligence officer who served as an advisor to President Trump in 2020, appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday to advocate for his nomination. He is among the key national security figures that Republicans aim to confirm before Trump’s inauguration on January 20th.

“We are not where we need to be,” Ratcliffe asserted in his opening statement. He highlighted Schiff’s misuse of authority when he led a group of 51 former intelligence officials in an open letter that dismissed Hunter Biden’s laptop as a “product of Russian disinformation.”

“In 2020, when the chairman of an intelligence committee mischaracterized a laptop belonging to Biden’s son as a Russian intelligence operation, and 51 former intelligence officials lent their authority to that claim, I stood firm. I stood alone and conveyed the truth to the American public,” stated the CIA nominee.

Ratcliffe emphasized, “My record of speaking truth to power and defending the integrity of the intelligence community is well established.”

Schiff, who was elected to the Senate in November after a lengthy tenure in the House, emerged as a pivotal figure in efforts to downplay the implications of Hunter Biden’s laptop controversy. He, along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, was implicated in orchestrating a letter from the 51 intelligence officials that denied the authenticity of the laptop after it was discovered in a repair shop by Rudy Giuliani.

Following Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election, Republicans regained control of the House and utilized the investigatory capabilities of various committees to gather additional information regarding the laptop and the Democrats’ minimization of its importance. An inquiry led by House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH) yielded documents and mandated testimonies from individuals such as former CIA Acting Director Mike Morell, who implicated Antony Blinken, former Obama advisor Leon Panetta, and other signatories.

Adam Schiff and John Ratcliffe have had previous conflicts. In 2020, a representative for the Democrat accused Ratcliffe of “deliberately misrepresenting” his interpretation of the laptop’s significance.

The repairman who owned the establishment where Hunter Biden’s laptop was abandoned subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against Schiff, claiming harm after Schiff labeled the laptop a “smear” orchestrated by the “Kremlin.” However, a federal judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2023, as reported by the Washington Examiner.

In the current political landscape, Schiff is unlikely to possess the same level of influence to obstruct President-elect Trump’s agenda, at least during the initial two years. Republicans maintain a narrow majority in the House and a solid position in the Senate, which is anticipated to promptly confirm most, if not all, of Trump’s nominees as early as next week.
